Parental complaints can be challenging, particularly if these are escalated to the governing body, to the local authority, leaders of Multi-Academy Trusts or to Ofsted. In the worst-case scenario, parental complaints can actually trigger a school inspection.

It is important to try to de-escalate these situations before they occur. It is usually better to speak to parents face to face, to listen to their concerns and together agree a way forward. In situations where parents come into school with a complaint, arrange a mutually convenient time to see them but try not to see them immediately. Sometimes an immediate meeting is impossible because of your other professional commitments but it is also important to give yourself some thinking time prior to a meeting. When you meet them, the following process is usually helpful.

Listen to them without interruption.

Acknowledge their concerns or complaint.

Talk with them, not at them.

Explain the situation from your perspective, including how you are supporting their child.

Review with the parent what has happened and together agree on the next steps.
